Self Exploration (2020-2022)

Through a series of self portraits, I seek to discover more about myself. Utilizing line, texture, and movement, these works describe my relationship to self as both emotionally charged and distant. Describing the self as I would a still life reflects themes such as gender identity, self-esteem, trauma, and aging. I discover more as I create more pieces for this body of work, as responding to medium and previous depictions influences the conversation I want to have.

This series has evolved to describe the self in contexts, and how those contexts influence how one views oneself. They together describe my growth and struggles both as an artist and as an individual. Self Exploration has served to challenge me in media I have never used, and ultimately led me back to where I began. What started as a quarantine project now serves a sampling of the growth in my life in a time in which it felt as though the world had no room for anybody at all to expand. This has been my longest spanning cohesive series and it taught me much about myself and my work for those to come.
